Happy “Naughty” Valentine’s Day!!
A Brief History of Valentines Day
Every year the 14th of February signals the date when lovers, friends and anonymous admirers send each other valentines, notes, cards and gifts!.
The day is of course Valentine’s Day!
Valentine’s Day began its life under a different name, the Lupercalia festival which was held each spring in Rome and celebrates the start of spring and fertility. It even has the original throw your keys into a bowl dating game, men and woman were paired up via the outcome of a lottery!
Toward the end of the 5th century, the Christian Church, felt the day was of unholy origins and the name of the day was changed by Pope Gelasius I, from Lupercalia to St. Valentine’s Day.
Why St. Valentine? well legend has it a martyr priest by the name of St. Valentine defied Gladius II Gothicus (an emperor of the time) forbid the priest from preforming marriages which would exempt the new husband from going to war. St. Valentine defied these orders and married couples in secret. Hence the connection between the named day and themes of love.
It wasn’t until the 14th century that St. Valentine’s Day became synonymous with love and romance .
