Happy Valentines Day!
The History of Valentines Day
Valentines Day falls every year on the 14th day of February.
The day originates from a festival to celebrate the coming of Spring, known as the Roman Festival of Lupercalia. The festival focused on fertility rites and even had a lottery where mean and women paired off!
At the end of the 5th century, the name change from Lupercalia to what we know as St. Valentine’s Day was decreed by Pope Gelasius I. The name change came about because Lupercalia was deemed to be an un-christian festival.
Mystery surrounds the actual St Valentine’s name, with several different stories laying claim to the name, one common legend, that seems to have formed Valentines day’s association with love, has it that a Priest, St. Valentine defied an emperors (Gladius II Gothicus) will and secretly married couples to spare them from going to war.
It wasn’t until much later that the day became synonymous with love and romance around the time of the 14th century.
